What is Stewardship?

I have to start off this site with a post about stewardship, after-all the site is called StewardshipDad.com.  If I started anywhere else, this entire site would be pointless.  I don’t want you to read pointless information.  I want you to have the understanding of what true stewardship really is and how you can apply it to all the other topics we’re going to talk about together. Let’s start with a definition shall we?

Definition of Stewardship

“The activity or job of protecting and being responsible for something” – I honestly and truly believe I have to break a thought that was drilled into your head by many people over your life span.  I know it took a while for me to completely understand it, and to be honest, I still have days where I struggle with this concept. It is the essential key to life that will allow you to live so much more free once you grasp the idea.

We are not the owner of anything but mere managers!

If you are anything like me, you say “my ….name anything you want here….” quite often. “My truck,” “My tv,” “My money.”  I heard a cringe with the last one because we all do it, we’re humans and that’s part of our nature.  But let’s view this from the proper perspective for a minute.  None of that is OURS it’s GOD’S! We’re are managers of everything God owns that He places in our lives…. Did you catch that?  I did it again, I said “our lives”  We are getting deep now.  The point is, nothing in this world is ours, not even ourselves. God owns it all, and He places these things in our charge as a manager for Him.

For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.  I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine

 – Psalm 50:10-11

The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

– Psalm 24:1

OK! Everything is God’s and we don’t own anything, how is that so helpful?

Quite simply, if you can completely grasp the concept, that you own nothing, what problems should you ever worry about? Or look at it this way, if you trust God with your salvation and eternal life, why can’t you trust Him with work, family, money, transportation, or anything else in life?

That’s one way not many people view their trust in God.  We completely trust John 14:6 where Jesus says “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me,” but for some reason we don’t trust in (or forget) Luke 12:22-25 where Jesus says “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.  Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.  Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?  And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?”

I want you to close your eyes and try and imagine how much less stress you would have in your life if you could fully trust in God with every aspect of your life.  Maybe you lost the job you were working, maybe you just found out you have an illness, maybe you’re going through a struggling marriage, whatever your situation is, trust in God with it, and He’ll give you guidance in managing the issue or He’ll take care of it for you completely.  God works in many ways, but one thing is 100% proof positive in life, God does work in everything.

Are you ready to completely trust in God’s provision? Are you ready to accept God as the owner of ALL things and take over being the steward God created you to be? I hope so.  As I’ve said many times and will say many times through out this site, this is a journey.  One I am also taking with you.  I pray you and I will grow in our spiritual lives to allow God complete ownership of everything. Thank you for joining me in the journey.

I’d love to hear from each and every one of you about your current journey and situations.  If you’re willing, please use the comment box below to answer this question, What is one area of your life you just haven’t been able to trust in God to always provide?
